The status of women in India has been changing year to year, but

discrimination between men and women is still prevalent. The National

Policy for the Empowerment of Women (2001) was an important step taken

by the government to ensure equal access to health care, quality education,

participation and decision making in social, political and economic life. The

Government of India confirmed 2001 as "Women Empowerment Year" and

implemented many programs to ensure better living to women, especially

poor women.
