In Starting With Nothing: The Story Behind RaiseUp, Priva Leuga shares his powerful journey from Ndogpassi 2 in Douala, Cameroon, to America, and ultimately to becoming an entrepreneur building technology for Africa.
After losing his father at eleven and facing difficult circumstances throughout his life, Priva learned early that he had to develop courage, discipline, and the strength to stand on his own.
In 2014, he arrived in America with only about $120, carrying dreams, technical skills, and the hope of creating a better future. But the journey was far from easy. He faced language barriers, unemployment, difficult jobs, financial pressure, loneliness, and the challenges of starting over in a new country.
Years later, after experiencing serious problems with vacation rentals in Africa, Priva saw an opportunity to build something different. In 2022, he began creating RaiseUp-an African vacation-rental platform designed to connect travelers around the world with property owners in Africa while promoting trust, professionalism, safety, and better hospitality standards.
With no investors, no established team, and limited resources, he built the platform while working a full-time job. Along the way, he faced technical challenges, doubts, financial struggles, limited bookings, and people who questioned whether his vision was possible.
But he continued.
This is more than a story about building a company. It is a story about immigration, failure, sacrifice, entrepreneurship, resilience, faith, and the power of believing in yourself when others cannot yet see your vision.
