As never planting an herb garden myself, and wanting to, I purchased the Start to Plant: Herb Garden. It was a nice hard bound book and was short in length. After a short introduction it gave a background on herbs for medicinal uses and herbs most used in the kitchen. These were the herbs that are used later in the book. The next few pages gave a specific listing of items you would need for planting herbs. Graham A. Pavey gave a list of building materials that can be used, soil types and plant care. It also gave a list of tools and equipment that would be necessary for starting your own herb garden. The book then went on to a step by step layout of how to create several types of gardens. The materials were listed beforehand along with general care for the herbs. There are ten projects altogether. The projects ranged from a simple window box to a more invovled herb wheel and herb ladder. However none of these projects were beyond my novice skills. The color step-by-step photographs, list of plants, specific materials needed, planting plan and alternative planting scheme for the project were so easy for me to follow, understand and complete that I now have several cascading herb pots and window boxes on my patio and will begin the herb wheel in my backyard when spring comes. This is the most simple and well laid out planting book I have found for the beginning herb gardener.
