This book is a step-by-step guide for the IT professional working a high-stress job who dreams about moving out of the city, but still wants to make a living working with computers. It can be done! This is exactly what author John Deans did in 1999 when he left one of Houston's most successful IT companies, moved his family to rural Texas, and started a home-based computer consulting firm. Small towns are a relatively new niche for computer consultants, but they offer ample opportunity for starting a successful small business. To excel in this environment, you must become a jack-of-all-computer-trades and enjoy working closely with many clients every day. Owning your own business in a rural environment that may be unfamiliar to you presents challenges--but the rewards are definitely worth it. Deans will help you every step of the way.
i bought this book for a friend of mine looking to start up his own home-based computer business. while it didn't meet all his needs (it went in to finding a town to move to in the beginning where you could have a successful business), there is a lot of information that he's gotten from the book (checklists and the like). it seemed like a decent choice for someone just wanting to start something small and see where it goes.
Excellent book, Surpassed expectations

I didn't really expect much from this book initially since it was priced alot lower than similar books. But I got it anyway since the idea of rural consulting was interesting to me. I was very surprized at just how valuable this book is. If you're thinking of working on your own in the IT field this book is worth every penny. It will help you overcome your inhibitions and see if you really are up to the tasks. You will also know how to market yourself effectively, and how to get paid for your time. The CD that comes with it is a really good resource too. By reading this you benefit from the experience of someone who has already been down this road before. I'd say this book is worth more than similar books that I recently paid more for. Ironic.
