The formula: kill the bugs and rescue survivors, and whatever you do, keep them off the Earth.
Looks like they could not afford to keep taking pictures with people and needed to switch to cartoons. This could also make a good a-d-v-e-r-t-i-s-e-m-e-n-t for a game.
You can see that this was made after the films, as it is more of an extension of the films than an attempt to recreate the original writing. They were able to completely strip the film of any original thought that Robert A. Heinlein was trying to express. However, they do use some of the verbiage from the book.
What is even weirder is the voice-over commentary of the film, where they say they are trying to be true to the book. However, I suspect they only read the first film script and have no idea that there was a book. The producers would be surprised if they read the book to see why Heinlein would not nuke the bugs, because that would just remove them, whereas a ground war is needed to change their minds.
The bottom line better suits a cheaper dialogue with a J-a-p-a-n-e-s-e feel. The troopers are more animated.
