Quick as a flash, Sage plunges a needle into my arm, injecting a clear liquid through a syringe. I cry out as a burning tingle begins to crawl through my veins. The world begins to grow fuzzy at an alarmingly rapid pace. The room spins.

"You give me one reason why I shouldn't pick up that dagger myself," Sage growls. "Now shut up! They're coming."

"What did you do?!" I'm screaming now, heedless of being discovered. If we aren't already. Sage's eyes are brightening even further and he glowers down at me as I slump against the desk. It's becoming harder to breathe, and I wonder if he's poisoned me.

"Not another word!" Sage snarls.

I couldn't if I tried. I crumple onto the hard wooden floorboards with a muted wail. My fingers stretch limply for the dagger just out of reach. Then I'm sinking... sinking into deep, dark water... drowning in shadows... fading away.
