This book presents essays about eighteen great scientists who lived in different corners of the world and at different time from antiquity to the 20th century. In contrast to the 1-2 lines of information usually given in textbooks about scientists (place of birth, period of life), Dr. Akaeva pays significant attention not only to their contribution to science, but also the scientists' private life and the socio-historical background of their life time. Written in a vivid style, this is a book that once started is difficult to put down. Obviously, these eighteen outstanding scientists portrayed in the book were selected in accordance with the author preferences and interest (Isaak Asimov in his "Biographical Encyclopedia of Science & Technology" (1982) gave biographies of 1510 great scientists). However, this doesn't diminish the value of this book and it won't be mistaken to say that young as well adult readers will be enthusiastic to read another book by this author about famous scientists.
