In December 1941, the elegant Older Katie steps on a train leaving Las Vegas, New Mexico, bound for her home in the southern area of the state. Heading off to World War II, Private Sanchez helps Katie with her bags, and during the trip, he inquires if she has ever seen combat.
In 1903, the spirited 16-year-old, Katherina "Katie" O'Houlihan de San Romano, busts broncos better than any cowhand, but against her mother's rules. Rose wants her daughter to finish school at the sisters' nunnery in Santa Fe.
Going against her mother's will to compete in a bronc busting competition, Katie's penance is to temporarily teach the students of the Columbus one-room schoolhouse. On Katie's first day, the older students rebel against her because she is virtually their age, but a massive storm crashes her way. Mexican Banditos, El Jefe Bravo, and Agustin attack the border town of Columbus to rob the bank. When the heist goes bad, they end up in the one-room schoolhouse. Their new plan involves kidnapping the children and holding them for ransom. Forced into the heart of Mexico, Katie keeps her students from harm through her sharp wit and the promise to the Banditos of a gold payoff if her charges remain unharmed. So, the chase commences, led by the local Sheriff, Katie's mother and brothers, Apache friends, and the Mexican Federales. For the scoop of the new century, the Santa Fe newspaperman Ted Waterspoon joins the chase in an attempt to free the schoolmarm and her students.
