This is the movie that started it all.
After the demise of Star Trek, the series, there was a void that could only be filled by reruns.
Beginning with this movie, that void has been filled and may keep on being filled. Eventually, it will morph into new series and movies.
Looking back on this film, all my favorite actors still look young and fit.
In this introductory movie, the Earth is threatened by a destructive space entity on a mission to find its creator. In the process, the Enterprise and even the Earth may become casualties.
What may be to some people appear to be a slow takeoff for the movie is, in reality, a time to savor the technology, reacquaint with favorite characters, and learn a little about new characters. This is necessary for the understanding of the adventure, as with the series, the story is not really about sci-fi. It is about human interaction, and the question is, what would you do in the situation?
This movie makes a good basis for films to come. My favorite in the series is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; I guess I am a sucker for time travel.
You are sure to find your favorite as you watch the series of films, including the ones with newer actors that still deal with human interaction.
Bizarre and boring

Some of the visual effects are amazing, especially for the time it was made. But the laughably bad uniforms. Spock crying. The cringe love story. Most of the movie is just the Enterprise wandering around aimlessly inside a giant floating alien. I suppose it's worth a watch if you find it streaming for free. Definitely not worth purchasing for repeat viewings.
