The title really says it all, for me. This edition of Star Teachers is more expensive and harder to find than the previous version and I am not sure if there really is any difference between the versions. This one serves as the soap box upon which Dr. Haberman rails the contemporary field of education for its failings, meaning its teachers. He appears to be somewhat of an angry old man, but he isn't all bark and no bite. The man knows what he is talking about and even runs an alternative school out of Milwaukee, WI where he uses his methods. The basic distinction is between what he calls star teachers and quiiter/failure teachers. There are many traits to either and many reasons a teacher may fall into one category and not the next. Most importantly, though, is that many teachers are far below where they ought to be, which must be remedied, and very few people are great teachers naturally. There are ways we can improve the quality of teaching in both new and veteran educators and in this book are some clues as to how we get there. In the course for which I read this, most students were really intimidated by how strict and black-and-white Haberman was. He doesn't make allowances for any excuses for inferior teaching quality and expects everyone to live up to their highest potential. Although somewhat intimidating, this is an exciting book to read and it does have the ability to really empower and empassion you like few others can do (at least for me).
