This collection has a lot going for it, not the least of which is that it doesn't take long for the reader to realize that they're spending time with a writer who's comfortable and well-versed when it comes to working within the short-story format. There isn't a bad piece in this book; in the interest of brevity, I'll hit what were, for me, the stand-out highlights: "Breakin' Into Ed's Place"-- A richly textured you-are-there account of the Plainfield, WI police officers who were the first to discover what Ed Gein had been up to. "The Hammer"-- I heard K.K. read this at the HorrorFind Weekend in Baltimore; it was what got me interested in his work in the first place. A true-to-facts story about the treatment of "enemies of the state" in Uganda. Chilling stuff. "Bonecrusher"-- A monster in the Everglades, part-gator and all-evil, who promises eternal youth to those who help him... as long as his virginal sacrifices are made on time. But virgins aren't that easy to find anymore, and not necessarily willing to give up without a fight. The work in this collection runs the spectrum of horror, from gruesome to psychological, and all of it effective. If you like your horror straight, without being sanitized or watered-down, this book is for you.
