Growing up together, Shannon Murphy never hesitated to stand up and protect her best friend, Jill, from bullies. One day, however, Shannon protects others in her school, along with Jill, from a school shooter. Believing her football coach father, Sam, has been murdered, she takes the gun of a dead policeman and shoots the killer.
Years later, as an adult, Shannon is a leasing agent at a large, luxury apartment community in Dallas, Texas. The dynamic, thriving market keeps her busy, however everything grinds to a halt when a young resident is found murdered in her apartment. Unfortunately, Shannon is the one to discover the body. She has anxiety problems from the incident in her childhood, and this threatens to bring back the panic attacks she has fought so hard to overcome.
When another homicide victim is found, and the crime scene bears striking similarities to the previous murders, Detective Lucas Manning goes undercover as a maintenance man, to help track down the serial killer. The community office staff, as well as hundreds of residents are on high alert. Manning is sure he will have a long, involved investigation, complete with the media attention crimes such as this always generate. What he hadn't counted on, was his strong attraction to Shannon. When she is contacted personally by the killer, they are afraid she may be on his hit list. Luke will do everything he can to solve this case and protect her, even if it costs his own life.
