The St. Mary's Avenue District, which in concept began at the intersection of Broadway and Virginia Street in Hannibal, Mo., launched the town's westward migration. Developers planted trees, put down granitoid sidewalks and negotiated for electricity, gas, water, sewer and fire protection. To facilitate the new population, Mark Twain School (as shown on the cover) was constructed, and opened for classes in the fall of 1912. In the meantime, street cars provided access to other parts of Hannibal, and allowed the district to become an entertainment destination.
