St. Augustine

By Enrico Livia

Philosophy demands attention. This book invites you to read calmly and offers a clear, structured path -without losing rigor or falling into oversimplification.
The phrase that defines Saint Augustine -the restless heart that rests only in God- sums up a life in which ambition, pleasure, guilt, intelligence, and the search for truth advanced together. He was a convert, but also an intellectual for whom changing his life meant rethinking everything: the soul, the will, evil, grace, and memory.
Across decades of intense activity, Augustine left sermons, letters, commentaries, polemical writings, and major books that allow us to follow the transformation of his work. He gave Latin Western thought a lasting vocabulary for speaking about the soul, sin, grace, and the will -and built the great political image of the two cities.
Above all, Augustine turned the restless heart into a question the West has never finished answering: why the human being can know the good and still choose evil.
