St Anthony: A Biblical Ascetic [Large Print]

By Matta el-Maskine, متى المسكين, Matthew the Poor

St Anthony: A Biblical Ascetic explores the biblical foundations of the monastic life through the life and writings of its founder, St Anthony the Great, by Fr Matthew the Poor.

The life that St Anthony embraced was precisely in accordance with the Bible, and was sustained by tremendous power from the Holy Spirit. His going out into the wilderness as an eighteen-year-old, to live in the mountains and parched deserts, expressed the intense faith that filled his heart.

The young man, who was used to a comfortable life, was not held back by the care of his only sister, now an orphan, or by the three hundred acres of land that promised him an easy earthly life. He answered the Gospel call with his whole heart.

Fr Matthew the Poor shows that monasticism is not an escape from the Gospel but a radical living of it. Through St Anthony's example he draws out the biblical roots of the ascetic life and its meaning for every believer.

This book is for monks and nuns, students of early Christianity and the Desert Fathers, and every Christian who wants to understand the call to leave all and follow Christ.
