Squirt is a young squid who rises early one morning intent on a day of play with sea horses, sand castles and game of ink and hide (squids squirt ink, you know). Because there is a storm at sea he is unable to go out and play. Instead he begins to watch a new cartoon on a holoclam (a squid television). Hours, then days pass and Squirt continues to watch the holoclam. His mother urges him to go outside and play with his friends but it is not until the holoclam runs away and he 'inks up' and clears his young mind that he experiences all that the world outside has to offer. Squirt realizes that he, with his own imagination, can become his own favorite cartoon character. Stacy Nyikos' SQUIRT is a delightful children's story that explains and celebrates imagination vs. the holoclam (television). It is written in whimsical rhyme and the simple but charming illustrations will attract and interest children. Squid Squirts, at the back of the book, answers ten interesting questions about squids. Armchair Interviews says: SQUIRT is a book that will introduce sea life to children and they will want to know more.
A rhyming picturebook story about a young squid
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
Imaginatively written by Stacy Nyikos and charmingly illustrated by Shawn Sisneros, Squirt is a rhyming picturebook story about a young squid who loves sea horse rides, sand castles, and games of ink and hide. When he becomes very attached to a cartoon on his "holoclam", he withdraws from his usual outside activities, preferring to watch TV all day. Even when his "holoclam" disappears, he can't break away from his desire to do nothing but watch TV... until his inky tantrum prompts a sudden discovery of the wonders of the world outside, and the possibility of finding his most beloved cartoon hero inside of himself. A page of true facts about squid offers a fascinating wrap-up to this uplifting tale with a message about hidden qualities inside oneself and beyond rote passivity.

My six-year-old and I have thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story is a well-written rhyme, and the artwork is just amazing. There are also some fun squid facts in the back of the book. I also think it will appeal to a wide range of children of different ages
