A Respiratory Therapist and his family become close friends with the family of one of his patients. In that family is a beautiful five year old child named Ruth. Beautiful except for the terrible dis-figuration of the left side of her face. Over the years as Ruth grows and experiences the usual taunting and cruel remarks by other children and some adults she builds a wall around her heart. She develops a lovely outgoing personality, full of joy and happiness but believes no man can possibly love her. Even the young boy, Jim, who becomes her friend at age twelve is kept relegated to the dreaded "friend" category. Despite his obvious love for her she refuses to see it even after they are adults and out of college. The love of a husband is not for Ruth. She is determined not to experience the heartbreak of loving someone only to have them inevitably turn away from her because of her face. The wall around her heart has been built brick by brick, steel bar by steel bar until it is impregnable. The story of a wounded heart, long term friendship, love denied and the painful, years long "war" to try and find healing.
