must read!

From the first line, the author transports you to colonial America and you don't want to leave. Based on her extensive research about Nathan Hale, we learn about his short life through the eyes of a young student. I found this to be a powerful book, both in the way it brings those turbulent times to life and in the way it made me think about how families were torn apart. For educators, this would be an important addition to your classroom or home school library.

Kids' Wings Award for Historical fiction at its best!

In 1776, Nathan Hale was hanged by the British as a spy, yet the story of his life is not a morbid one and his legacy is one of victory. Three years earlier, Nathan Hale was an 18-year-old schoolmaster, determined to make a difference in the lives of his young scholars. He was full of fun and did unusual things to get his students to want to learn. Twelve-year-old Jonah Hawkins was one of Master Hale's thirty students in a small schoolhouse in New London, Connecticut. This is the American Revolution told from two points of view...that of The Man, Nathan Hale, who shared his love of learning and his love for America and that of The Boy, Jonah, his devoted student who was learning to make his own choices in a time when his world was crumbling around him. It is the story of gentleness, compassion, honesty, courage, conflict, and patriotism. It is the story of a young colonial patriot, whose last words still ring today: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Nathan Hale was gifted in his love of learning, his love of children, and his love for his country. In the end, he gave the greatest gift of all: his life. SPY! puts faces on the American Revolution. It helps you experience historical events woven into a moving, exciting fictionalized story of the people through the eyes and the hearts of Nathan Hale and the fictional Jonah Hawkins. They will help this part of history will become a part of who you are.
