Central Massachusetts has a long sports history that dates back to the 19th Century. In fact, one of the first professional baseball teams in history was owned by a man from Ashburnham named Ivers Whitney Adams. And one of the earliest National League teams was from Worcester, the Brown Stockings.
The Central Massachusetts region has produced some of the greatest managers in the history of baseball, including Connie Mack and Wilbert Robinson, and is the home of the man who wrote the epic baseball poem, "Casey at the Bat." The area's sports legacy also features legendary sports figures like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Casey Stengel -- all of whom left their mark on the region.
It is also one of the birthplaces of professional basketball and the host of the first Ryder Cup.
