This movie made me laugh until my stomach hurt then turned around and made me cry so hard my eyes hurt too. The characters are easy to love and easy to relate to. After all, weren’t we all rebellious teens once?
Put into an absolutely absurd situation, these characters react exactly as I would’ve expected my teenaged self to react to realizing my own mortality while learning how magical first love can be. I related so closely to the spirited main character as she learned both love and loss and how to cope with them at the same time, especially when her attempts at coping are all going awry.
I started this movie on a whim, just wanting to watch something funny and a little bit dark. I didn’t expect it to turn into something deep and vivid and heart wrenching, but it did. This film is packed full of meaning and insight and sparks laughter even through tears. It is so hard to write a review with no spoilers! But the moment you realize it’s all coming crashing down is so utterly impactful I wouldn’t want to spoil the depth of feeling it evokes by giving it away.
This captured, for me, what it was like to be an awkward, cynical youth and how absolutely important those years are in our development. The realistic expression of learning to live and to appreciate living without fear was more than I’d imagined I would see here and it is worth watching again and again.
