As a gerontologist studying older women, I found this book provocative. As a member of the Baby Boom generation, I found it extremely useful in clearing away the outworn stereotypes of older women. Sullivan elucidates a powerful way of being in the world for older women. Sullivan calls women to the experience of age with enthusiasm - reading Sullivan one's fear around ageing is ameliorated. One can begin to consider that growing old might indeed be a gift rather than something none of us would ever want to be. Although I would rather she use the word "Crone" than "she-elder" (the word she-elder still seems to say women come from the rib of man and are secondary to the male elder) her message is one any woman interested in advancing towards conscious ageing should read. Her book provides us with insight, clarity, and renewed possibility. It is time to be visible and vocal as older woman and Sullivan's book provides a conceptual underpinning for that kind of feminist movement.
