Power of the mind

Born in Scotland in 1887, the author was for many years a student of metaphysics; in the 1930s he studied in Tibet under the great teacher Geshi Rimpoche. After this training he set out on a mission to heal the sick and bring enlightenment to people in many parts of the world. This book consists of a series of lectures given by MacDonald-Bayne in Johannesburg during the 1940s. The lectures are both philosophical and practical as he demonstrates the power of the inner being and various spiritual healing techniques. He covers all important aspects like the value of relaxation, breathing exercises, creative power, how to transmit thought, how to treat affected areas, the interaction between the etheric and the physical body, absent treatment, the mental process in the body, the vibratory action of herbs and drugs, how to banish fear and how to rearrange the subconscious through education. I have previously encountered many of his thoughts in later self-help and metaphysics books and sometimes even his exact words as the title of a book or two that have appeared over the last ten years. Discovering the origin of these words of wisdom was thus a great pleasure. It is clear from the text that attending his lectures must have been a riveting experience as he was a powerful person and many of these healing techniques and powers were demonstrated during the lectures. He speaks with great authority and the nobility of his spirit shines through the text after all these years. His advice to healers is full of practical common sense and touches on factors that I have never read anywhere else. The section of psychoanalysis is particularly interesting and I share his opinion that it is like shining a torch in a dark room instead of switching on the godly light from above, i.e. wallowing in the mud instead of encouraging the lotus. This book is a great read for those interested in esoteric matters in general, and of particular interest to holistic healers and those who wish to take responsibility for their own health.
