Spider Davis is trying to find out who or what is killing elderly people in her community. A pharmacist who operates her own franchise pharmacy in Springfield, Illinois, Spider is also a practicing Wiccan. When Annabelle Tyler, the grandmother of Rob Tyler, a Springfield police detective, becomes ill, Spider and Rob form an uneasy alliance to investigate causes since Annabelle is also one of Spider's customers. Acting on her instinct, Spider calls on one of Annabelle's neighbors, Burton Andrisi, who turns out to be much more than just an elderly neighbor. He is a very powerful practitioner of a craft similar to Spider's Wicca but bent towards evil. He is threatening Spider when Rob Tyler shows up. Rob and Spider interview Andrisi but learn little. Spider is discussing Andrisi with her former coven leader when her phone goes dead. Spider detects Andrisi as he breaks the glass in her kitchen door. She hides in the spare bedroom used for her Wiccan temple. Andrisi finds Spider, attacks her, and has nearly overcome her when Rob Tyler shows up, concerned about Spider. When Spider and Rob subdue Andrisi, he kills himself with a compulsion spell that will not allow him to betray his master. Spider and Rob search Andrisi's body and find only one item of interest: a black and gold onyx talisman that Spider can see was Andrisi's link to his master. The scene shifts to Boston, where we are introduced to Analiese D'Arquette. We see Analiese attempting to meditate, but unable to do so due to a disquieting feeling. She is Andrisi's master and has sensed his death. Analiese summons a demon, Imanix, bound loosely in service to her, and uses the demon to locate the person who killed Andrisi and now has the talisman - Spider. The pair track down Analiese as she attempts to gain control of an even more powerful object, the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistos. They receive the assistance of some unlikely allies in this effort, including Hawk Davis, Spider's private investigator brother, and Alan Jones, an esoteric academic who has crucial information about Analiese's goal and how they can stop her. They track her to an ancient shrine in Alexandria, Egypt, where a trap left by Analiese injures Rob and kills Hawk. But even after Spider and her allies defeat Analiese and retrieve the Emerald Tablets, there is one last trap awaiting Spider Davis: her desire for power versus her intent to serve the Light. Rob Tyler and Alan Jones can only watch and hope for the best as Spider wrestles with an offer of immense power from Imanix - will she remain a humble Wiccan practitioner or will she replace Analiese as a wielder of black power?
