Really Helpful Book

One of the benefits of this book over other good public speaking books is that the authors really "get" what scientific talks need to be - not just engaging but full of factual information. The authors' tips for effectively using powerpoint to slowly introduce information to the audience is just one example of the type of sound tips offered with a real understanding of science speakers - and more importantly, science audiences.

Sound advice for the development of a critical skill

Public speaking is a skill that most professionals need to have. Yet, it is often one that is learned through experience rather than training. This book is a step-by-step guide to the preparation of a presentation and is well worth reading. The authors are quite right when they point out that the most effective presentations can be summed up by the phrase, "Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them what you tell them, then tell them what you told them." In other words, a descriptive introduction, understandable message and then a summary and recapitulation of the message. The authors are also honest in pointing out that even the most experienced people still get nervous before they deliver a speech. Like so many other things, the key is the correct channeling of that energy into the presentation. Another excellent point of advice is to always make sure that all posters and slides are not subject to information overkill. Putting too much information on a slide or presentation is a sure way to turn an otherwise informative speech into an ineffective dud. Once the audience enters a state of confusion, it is almost impossible to get them back into a state of understanding. This book will not cure all of the problems you encounter when faced with giving a presentation. However, it contains a great deal of sound advice on doing them right. Since nearly all of us will at some point give a presentation with significant career consequences, buying this book and reading it are time and money well spent.
