Speak Truth to Power: A Quaker Search for an Alternative to Violence

In 1955, in response to the escalation of armaments during the Cold War, the American Friends Service Committee issued the pamphlet Speak Truth to Power , challenging Americans to attempt to solve global problems through nonviolence rather than violence. Drawing upon examples of successful nonviolent resistance by Quakers and others, the pamphlet became known as a key statement of Christian pacifism.
