This was my favorite book as a young child. I read it over and over. SPACE ROCK RULES!

It will tweak the imagination of young readers

This story starts with a simple and standard experiment for elementary school classes. Each person in the class addresses a postcard, ties it to a helium balloon and releases it. The hope is that the person that finds the card will write their name and address and mail it back. That way, the class can see where the balloons went. At first, Bob's balloon gets stuck, but eventually it flies up and away. Shortly after this, Bob finds a rock that turns out to be alive and intelligent. The rock had fallen out of a spaceship and is now stuck on Earth. It lives off the energy from the sun and can communicate with Bob, so the first thing it does is help him with his math homework. He then takes space rock to show and tell, but he is laughed at because the rock does not talk. However, things change on the playground when space rock is able to communicate with his ship, which comes back and picks space rock up. The whole class and the teacher see the ship so now Bob is believed and the hero of the class. The last caption is where Bob gets a postcard in the mail from space rock. This is a delightful story for young readers, the illustrations are clear. Space rock looks like it is smiling and the text is large and easy to read. The plot will also tweak the imagination of young readers, so I heartily recommend this book.
