The National Defense Authorization Act, which formed the U.S. Space Force as the first new branch of the armed services since 1947, was signed into law on December 20, 2019. The USSF was founded as a result of the general understanding that space is essential for national security. It became evident that a military force dedicated only to achieving primacy in the space domain was necessary when combined with the growing danger posed by strategic competitors in space.
