Raquel Valle-Sent es's Soy Como Soy y Qu , first published by M & A Editions in San Antonio, Texas, in 1996, and now in a new expanded edition, chronicles her journey of self-discovery, which leads from Laredo to Veracruz and back. This new edition's first part, entitled "Laredo," documents the poet's experience growing up in Laredo, Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border, a region neither Mexican nor American, where both cultures clash and converge. . In the second section, "Veracruz," the poet confronts the domestic oppression imposed by her husband's traditional Mexican machismo and the disdain she encounters in Mexico for being an American, a gringa, a pocha. The final section, "Ahora," tracks her return to Laredo, where her divorce and disillusionment ultimately push her to forge her independence. The final poem, "Soy como soy y qu ," now a border classic, affirms her identity as a fronteriza, neither totally Mexican nor totally American yet an alchemy of both.

The original 1996 edition of 33 poems, written primarily in Spanish and Spanglish, won the 1997 International Premio de Literatura Jos Fuentes Mares in Letras Chicanas awarded by the Universidad Aut noma in Ciudad Ju rez, Chihuahua, M xico, Valle-Sent es being the first woman to receive this award. This new edition includes the original 33 award-winning poems plus several new unpublished poems, most written in English yet all discrete in tone and theme.
