"What should we do then?" the crowd asked. Johnanswered "The man with two tunics should sharewith him who has none, and the one who has foodshould do the same". Tax collectors also came tobe baptized, "Teacher", they asked, "what shouldwe do?" "Don't collect any more than you arerequired to", he told them. Then some soldiersasked him, "and what should we do?" he replied,"Don't extort money and don't accuse peoplefalsely --- be content with your pay". --- Luke 3:10 -14The above passage has all the people in a normal society, as we have here in our nation: the civil society --- businessmen and women, students, workers, the self-employed etc; the men in uniform ----- policemen, soldiers and other shades of uniformed class. The people were perplexed: What shall they do to enter the kingdom of God? They were eager to know what it takes for any to enter into the kingdom of God. They are conscious of the inevitability of death to every creature. They also know that death does not give notice, and they are aware that death comes to each person, not according to birth or positions in life. This fear of death sharpened their interest on where to spend eternity. Mankind does not like suffering, even for a temporary duration. Because their focus centered on the sure pathway into the kingdom of God. John simply gave them a general guideline. If they had asked for details, John would have given them the second guideline on restitution for the sins they have committed in the past to enable them transit to a new beginning. God forgives sins, no matter how terrible it is, only when the offender has truly rejected his old ways of living and turned a new leaf. And such offender is ready to suffer any consequences regarding his past mistakes. God did not say a waiver would be given because the offender has repented. You cannot have public resources in your hand and still claim of becoming a new creature. You must do away with those things in your custody that truly does not belong to you. And you must go a step further to pay restitution for the damages you have created. The ministers of the gospel can direct one in such mission just as John the Baptist directed the people. No man should feel comfortable when the weight of wrong doings is holding him in one place like dead-man anchor. Our stay here is temporary, not permanent, and we must liberate ourselves from the shackles of sin. Thus is a demonstration of ignorance of the highest order for man to spend this few meaningless year on earth doing what will tie him permanently on the earth surface till damnation when his peers are in the bosom of the Creator. Think about it
