A Fascinating Portrait of the Different Peoples in the Former Soviet Union

The author is an expert on the Soviet Union. He had visited it several times before the Soviet Union fell. He had lived in the Soviet Union as a child when his father had a job there. Mandel has written several other books on the Soviet Union. In this book he examined the national policy of the Soviet government and showed that even though the largest nationality in the Soviet Union were the Russians, the Russians did not dominate the other nationalities like they did when when the former Soviet Union was the Russian Empire it was the Russian Empire. The book shows the variety of different cultures among the nations of the Soviet Union and how the Communist government promoted the national cultures. The author interviewed many people in the different Republics and they gave fascinating insights into life in the Soviet Union. It makes me curious about what had become of these people when the Soviet Union fell. The Soviet Union created affirmative action policies to aid the different nationalities and minorities, especially the Jews who had been oppressed under the Tsars. The author clears up many of myths about the Soviet Union and gives us information about the many great cultural figures in the Soviet Union who are obscure or unknown in the West.

I found this book a very interesting read. Mr. Mandel's travels and interest in the vast cultures of the former Soviet Union shed an interesting light those in the States were not privy to. To this day this book informs me of who the "Russian" people are. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the people of the world.
