From 1866 to 1949 the Union veterans organization, The Grand Army of the Republic, held an annual gathering. In 1895 it was held in Louisville, KY. The enterprising publishers of Wentworth Publishing House made sure that the men attending the reunion would know where to find the best prostitutes in town. With names like Jew Louie, Daisy Mills, Fannie Evans, and Madame La Roy, the madams of the sporting houses all had advertisements in this souvenir guide. Some houses in the guide were for "married men only" and were essentially boarding houses. But the euphemisms used within this guide leave little question what was being offered.Part of the charm of this long-forgotten treasure is the mish-mash of typography and artwork on the pages. For that reason, Big Byte Books has reproduced it using images of the pages. OCR simply could not capture the delightful quirkiness of this 19th century guide to prostitution in Louisville.
