Tomatis For Beginners

This book is about the Tomatis Effect. Dr. A. A. Tomatis is a French ear, nose and throat specialist who discovered that high frequency noises charge the human brain while low frequency noises dull it. By manipulating sound played to the patient a whole range of ailments can be cured, including "deafness, emotional disturbance, hypertension, insomnia, speech defects, epilepsy, hyperactivity, dyslexia, and even autism." (p. 2) Topics covered include: Basic information on the Effect, The personal story of Joudry's discovery of the Effect, A brief discussion of how the Effect helps sleep, Practical advice on how the technology may be used (e.g. how long you should listen), Case histories, and, Basic information about the biology involved. The book is written in an enthusiastic and easy style, but be warned, this text is definitely for beginners and is written by an amateur. There are no reports of any experiments at all and only 7 references. The only information given are the lines: "Tomatis' work is thoroughly scientific; his discoveries have been tested and confirmed by the Sorbonne University in Paris, and given the name The Tomatis Effect. As a result he has been made a member of the French Academy of Medicine and the Academy of Science. (p. 7) Joudry is the entrepreneur who greatly popularized the Tomatis Effect with tapes that can be bought on the internet. According to Tomatis a special diagnosis needs to be made and music frequency modulated especially for the individual is played. Joudry, with her tapes, uses a one cure solves all approach.
