When the Germans march into Denmark, Baron Henrik Ahlefeldt exchanges his nobility for anonymity, assuming a new identity so he can secretly row messages for the Danish Resistance across the waters to Sweden. American physicist Dr. Else Jensen refuses to leave Copenhagen and abandon her research--her life's dream--and makes the dangerous decision to print resistance newspapers.
As Else hears rumors of the movement's legendary Havmand--the merman--she also becomes intrigued by the mysterious and silent shipyard worker living in the same boardinghouse. Henrik makes every effort to conceal his noble upbringing, but he is torn between the fa ade he must maintain and the woman he is beginning to fall in love with.
When the Occupation cracks down on the Danes, these two passionate people will discover if there is more power in speech . . . or in silence.
"Sundin shines in her newest novel. Her craft is inimitable, and her literary finesse radiates from every page."--Booklist starred review
"Sundin grounds this suspenseful tale in rich historical detail."--Publishers Weekly
The Sound of Light by Sarah Sundin is a stand-alone novel centered in Copenhagen in the 1940’s. Dr. Else Jensen feels the call to help her fellow countrymen. Baron Henrik Ahlefeldt feels that joining the Resistance is his way of getting the ultimate revenge. The danger is real. Will they both succeed or lose everything? This was a very well-written story. You felt the struggles of the characters. The suspense kept you turning the pages. I enjoyed the history being brought to life in such an exciting way. Even though Else was terrified she still had the courage to do what was right. May we learn from her!
I received this book from the publisher for my honest review.
