Soul Talk Counseling that makes sense.

I enjoyed reading the book Soul Talk, Larry Crabb also has an online class version called Soul Care at obdu.org that is a much better as he is lecturing as if in a classroom setting. The premise with his form of counseling is seeing the other person with the potential God has given them. Which mean it takes time to get to know the person and avoid places rules upon them. But replacing foolishness with godly appetites. It also require knowing yourself. I do fin his method similar to that out lined in J Philip Newell’s book Christ of the Celts and also to CS Lewis when he wrote in The Weight of Glory: It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which,if you say it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – These are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.

My spirit immediately responded to this book - great book i wish everyone would read this and apply it to relationships and their walk with Christ. Feeds the spirit with the truth that Christ lives in us and can and does speak through us. Best advise i have read or hear on how to hear, speak, feel, and do what the spirit is leading from God. Thank you Larry for writing it.

Revolutionize method to help others

The standard methods of counseling, advising, pastoring, praying, etc are innefective in helping ourselves and others reach spiritual maturity and a right relationship with God. Soul talk, when correctly applied, will change all that. And a professional degree is not necessary. As with all things concerning God, the most effective tool is the Holy Spirit living within us. I think the book could have been half as long and just as effectively brought the message.

What the Church is Missing...

In his latest book Dr. Crabb continues his exploration and pilgrmimmage into what should make the body of Christ different, both individually and corporately, from the rest of the world. How do we interact with others, in a meaningful way, in a supernatural way, in a way that genuinely helps them walk with God? Not through just encouragement, not through just rules, but through a dance with the Spirit, as he likes to put it, that makes us humble and dependent and powerful, all at the same time. Excellent mind-stretching material to make you think and reflect on how to better enter people's lives in a rich and God-soaked way.

Great Book

Crabb's latest book does an excellent job of telling you how to really minister to what is going on in the deepest parts of people. What makes this book so good, it it refuses to give you a formula. Granted he has steps, but his steps are more to get you to avail yourself to the holy spirit's leading. Thus SoulTalk will look a variety of different ways. Crabb really shows you how to pay attention to what is going on behind people's words, what's really going on with you as you're listening to people talk, and how to get past mere empathy and advice giving to Dance with the Spirit. Required reading for every minster/spiritual director type person.
