Nick De Luca had no desire to move to the large city of Chicago. But he had no choice: he is only fifteen years old. The year is 1925. His father, a blue-collar worker, just can't land a good steady job. Finally, in desperation the family moves to the city where he is told a factory position is waiting. But, bad luck keeps coming as the job never materializes.With the family needing money, Nick starts work as a shoeshine boy at a downtown grocery store. The family barely keep the bills paid. The ultimate misfortune occurs when Nick's father dies on the street, killed by a drunk driver who has pull with city officials. Nick tries to accept this disaster as a rough part of life, but the situation is too tangled for his young mind. He now decides the future for him is outside the law, and he pursues it with a vengeance.
