If you have a child who is interested in learning to ice skate, have I got a book for you! This is the story of Sophie, a young Asian girl who dreams of becoming a professional ice skater. Sophie knows it will take time and hard work if she wants her dream to come true. I like that they mention it will take lots of time and practice to reach her goal. The book talks about what clothes you will have to wear to stay warm, it shows a boot (ice skate) and it's laces, hooks, eyelets, sole, toe pick and blade and a cross section of the right boot with inside and outside edge. It talks about how to tie your shoes and that your skates are fit usually at least 1 size smaller than your street shoes! It names the basics skills you must learn like the Mohawk, fishes, backward wiggles, three turn, figure eight, one foot spin, forward spiral, toe loop, layback spin and getting up from the ice. Sophie also takes ballet lessons two times a week because ballet helps you become more flexible and graceful. there are also ballet terms.

I bought other Rachel Isadora books and was delighted to find this as well. I am very interested in ballet books and found this very well executed. I am very tickled to find all these books and wonderful artwork because it is difficult to find artists painting dancers and in this case, skaters, today. I, once again, want to thank Ms. Isadora for her pursuance of the dance...........keep up the great work!
My daughter wants to follow in Sophie's footsteps

I love finding books where the main character shares my daughters name. This book was excellent and will last a long time I think, as it covers general skating information, more specifics about skates, "moves", and competitions, and all from the viewpoint of 8-year old Sophie (she started when she was 3, the age of my Sophie). As usual the pictures are exquisite and I would recommend buying this for any Sophie I knew, as well as any budding skater.
