The plot also centers on the meeting of the Catholic and Jewish religions, as Sophia and her hosts adapt to and learn about each other. The story then moves to Cincinnati, Ohio, as Sophia emigrates there after the war and where she becomes a part of another dilemma- the predicament of unwed pregnancy in the 1940s and adoption.
