Disaster after disaster after disaster, Sophia Aquila is haunted by her father's voice urging her to keep moving on, stay ahead of her loses. In October, 1937, after her parents accidentally drown in the Gulf of Mexico during their attempt to escape in a small fishing skiff from their destitution in Cuba and start again in the USA, Sophia, now an orphan, at age fourteen, and alone, sails the skiff to Key West, Florida where she finds her father's brother and begins a new life expecting to continually suffer more loses and believing she must follow her father's dictum to keep moving on and stay ahead of her loses.
She survives hurricanes in Cuba, Key West, Florida and South Cape May, New Jersey, but after accepting a job as nanny for a family in Cape May Point, when federal immigration agents visit her and the family her greatest test of survival occurs in her heart.
