Songs from the Pit: Letters to My Mother

They say, when you are approaching 30, that's around the time when you find yourself saying "Mom you were right." In my case, that's ever so true. Those words usually come after a few hard life lessons. Most of my life lessons happened in a place I call "The Pit." These pits are made of pain, betrayal, failure, judgment, and the struggle with self-worth. We all have been there. We desperately sink into the dungeons of our minds where we cry out to be saved from ourselves. We are never prepared to face the terrors life hands us. We fall victim to the chains of pride, discouragement, and rebellion in those moments where we do not understand. If by chance you had a mother like mine, you had a whole lot to hold onto in those seasons. Because of her, I found God in those pits. Every pit birthed a new cry, and every cry forged a song from deep within my soul. These poems are my songs. My songs from the pit.
