Jamie Drummond, a young Highland Scot, former military officer, and a week short of his twenty-eighth birthday, entered this maelstrom of activity shortly before dawn in early April. He brought a string of four fine horses--three mares and a young very skittish stallion--and three heavy trunks in a drover's wagon. Two contained his clothes, books, and writing materials.
