Over the past ten years, Jos Antonio Rosas has traveled across four continents, photographing mass gatherings of different kinds. It was in 2015, when the photographer attended his first Glastonbury Festival, a legendary music festival set in the picturesque landscape of Somerset hills, England, he witnessed something fundamental about humanity: our need to belong, to be part of a community and to share the deepest elements of our being with others. He felt part of something deeply rooted in human nature, a yearning for a special type of connection not found in our daily lives. This realization was the starting point for a journey that took him around the world, photographing communal gatherings, seeking to understand what draws people away from the familiarity and comfort of their everyday lives and into the chaos of large crowds. Somewhere We Feel Free comprises events ranging from Carnival in Brazil to the Festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria in Puno, Peru, to Holi, the festival of colors in India, and is published as a bilingual edition in Spanish and English.
