I read this wonderful mystery a year or so ago after meeting Sharon Carton. She entranced me and so I thought I ought to read it. I can tell you that I couldn't put the book down - and read it through the night. The ending was surprising. Her writing is concise, continuing its literary value right up to the end. Thanks Sharon for a great read - and I can hardly wait for the next one!!!

Sharon Carton has written a masterpiece. As I was reading I was sure I would be able to guess what would happen next but every time she surprised me completely which rarely happens to me. Jack and Ernie are fantastic characters that became "friends" as I read and I can only hope that Ms. Carton has more books on the horizon with equally intriguing characters. Kudos to the author for continuing to surprise me, as I read I found myself in disbelief at the twists and turns taking place before me. Truly a book you will not want to put down, order it immediately and enjoy the roller coaster ride the author will take you on. I dare you to be able to put it down!
A Truly Original Detective Story

From the very first page I knew I had found an intriguing book. Nothing is as it seems in the world Ms. Carton has created. It is a wild ride through a tangle lies and intrigue with a detective who is unstoppable in his quest for the truth. It is a tale of a loyal friend who is also a detective with an investigative style all his own. A violent killer, Florida's sultry summer, drugs and conspiracy all combine to make this a page-turner that leaves you anxiously awaiting Ms. Carton's next book.

Want a good mystery;Want a mental meal that may bite back??

Told from the first person perspective, Sometimes You Get Killed is a well thought out, well plotted mystery that has you jumping through hoops from page one. Sharon Carton lets her characters speak in their own, real voices, instead of assigning them pre-fabbed personalities and characteristics, which I found refreshing. Her main characters, Jack and Ernie seemed alive, and sounded like people you could meet in your own city. They weren't stiff and wooden - far from it in Ernie's case, believe me - and I found myself wanting to meet them, maybe take them out for lunch at IHOP. I was totally taken in by Sharon's writing style, her biting commentary on life and her ability to keep me guessing as to how this book would end. Each and every time I was sure I had solved the mystery, something new and even more puzzling would crop up and I would have to re-evaluate my theories. I love a book that can make me do that. There were enough twists and side-steps and all out U-turns to keep my attention, and several times I almost threw the book across the room and screamed (which for me means that the author did something I was NOT expecting and my synapses over-loaded) at the author and congratulate her on taking me by surprise. This book makes you think, and what more can you ask from a good mystery?Overall, this is good read. I would recommend it highly, and only say that you might want to block out a long afternoon to read it, because once you start you won't want to stop.
