Master Storyteller

This short novel gripped my attention from first to last. It involves the reader in the lives of two main characters, a solitary man in his forties, and a young girl hitchhiker who knows how to get her way. He feels sorry for her and offers her a ride, but this is not a novel about sex or male dominance. Rather, it's about how people use one another and drag one another down into hopelessness and despair. The girl is pregnant. She manipulates her way into the man's life, takes control of him, and seems about to destroy him. You won't know until the final paragraphs how the book really hangs together and which of the two main characters it's really all about. I highly recommend this book by the author of the much more famous book "The Cruel Sea."
