Book Overview

An inspiring memoir that explores nature's crucial role in our emotional and mental health, and a "poignant meditation on surviving the darkest recesses of human nature" (The Marginalian).

Bats can hear shapes, plants can eat light, and bees can dance maps. When his life took him to a painfully dark place, the poet behind The CryptoNaturalist, Jarod K. Anderson, found comfort and redemption in these facts and the shift in perspective that comes from paying a new kind of attention to nature.

Something in the Woods Loves You tells the story of the darkest stretch of a young person's life, and how deliberate and meditative encounters with plants and animals helped him see the light at every turn. Ranging from optimistic contemplations of mortality to appreciations of a single mushroom, Anderson has written a lyrical love letter to the natural world and given us the tools to see it all anew.

Marvelous!

Something in the Woods Loves You is beyond beautiful - it is mystical and profound; whimsical and spiritual all at once. Jarod K. Anderson doesn't shy away from the pain of mental illness and depression, but rather uses his love of nature to help him live with it. "Trees are medicine", and so are great blue herons, lightning bugs, raccoons, mice, bats and all creatures who share their existence on this earth with us. I dearly loved this memoir. I feel the very same way about all of nature and all the marvelous creatures who share their lives with us in the beauties and wonders of the natural world which is all around us. I always feel better when I can spend time in nature. I truly believe our Creator blessed us with all that we could need to heal our bodies and our healing is all right here in nature and in Him. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Beautiful local piece

I randomly happened upon this book and absolutely love it. The writer lives in Ohio, where I’m from so I could vividly see the imagery he so beautifully described. I’m 33 and at that point in my life of, “who am I” which has brought down my general mental health a great bit. Reading this feels like the author climbed into my brain, and was able to verbalize what I can’t articulate myself. Somehow, reading this made me feel seen, and loved.
