DESPITE THE PECULIAR NAME-and a few town misfits-Bloodrun, Alaska is ordinarily a quiet and peaceful place. This morning, however, Detective Terry Volker is called to the scene of a ghastly murder where the victim has been sawed in half at the waist. While the borough's small police department begins putting an investigation together, Terry becomes haunted by memories of his past "duties"-the desperate measures he's had to employ to catch other bad men-and doubts if he still has what it takes to stop this one. With the help of his partner Eddie Koyukuk, they travel together down a dark path through Bloodrun's history, ancient Inuit mythologies, twisted ciphers, psychoactive hallucinogens, and most dreadfully, more severed bodies. As their list of suspects dwindles and they become more immersed in the town's sinister folklore, Terry begins to wonder if the killer is just some small-town oddity who believes in these evil legends, or if there's something more to them-something in the blood.
