The starship Mayflower visits a planet where the inhabitants are thought to have a great deal of potential. But Darlene and Cecilia discover that the society built by the inhabitants, known as the Fant, is on the road to self destruction. While the two human women make their observations, Cecilia meets a family greatly affected by the orders of the new administration. And she begins to have sympathy for them.
Set in the universe of the novel First Assignment, Darlene and Cecilia must reconcile their feelings as they watch the Fant society disintegrate.
