One of the characters named Puzz asked "Why is is is?" to find the answer was "Because that was the way it was". This author attempts to explain the horrors of living in slavery but also wishes to express the hope, the aspirations, and friendships of two slaves as they come to the realization that they were not born slaves. "Fezz, how come all black folks is slaves?" asked Puzz. "Just because they are," said Fezz. "That ain't no answer," said Puzz,. "If you is born with black skin does that make you a slave for your whole life?"
