The Book, Somalia a Failed State in Africa, was carried out to survey, establish and document the characteristics of what a failed state is and to trace the history of Somalia which has been characterised as a failed state. A failed State has no central government or if it exists, it is so weak it cannot effectively run the affairs of state or even protect itself relying on foreign armies. It has no currency but if it has the currency is worthless so a failed state uses currencies of other countries. It has no security forces so it exists in the knapsacks of foreign armies like five countries' armies are baby seating the government of Somalia now. Most of her population lives in refugee camps outside the country. In Somalia the work and activities of one man, Major General (Comrade) Mohammed Siad Barre dominate the history of Somalia on the road to a failed state 1969-1991 giving the world the largest refugee camp at Dadaab in Kenya's North Eastern Region. The people in this camp fear going back home due to insecurity and famine as the territory is controlled by guerrillas. What is called the government of Somalia in Mogadishu is protected by four foreign countries' armies.
