I got to meet George at a symposium on Pearl Harbor in Pensacola Florida where I bought the book and got it autographed. It is a good book and is valuble for the story it tells. It is a "casual" book, readable, and is not self-serving.
American Heroes!

I was delighted to be able to find this book. I have already read it -a borrowed copy. I served on the USS Waldron DD-699 for 4 years. I have always been interested in VT-8, which LCDR Waldron commanded and of which Ensign Gay was the Sole Survivor. It is most interesting read. These men were perhaps the main reason that the Battle of Midway was an American victory. Torpedo Squadron 8, flying off the USS Hornet, didn't fly toward the last reported sighting of the Japanese Fleet, but LCDR Waldron had a hunch that they would be moving away from Midway Island. He was correct, broke radio silence to report their location, and, although all the planes of Torpedo Squadron 8 were shot down, their attack so disoriented the Japanese Fleet that they became sitting ducks for the dive bombers, who showed up shortly afterwards, based on Waldron's position report. When is the shooting down of all the planes in a Squadron a victory? When it is Torpedo Squadron 8. Ensign Gay's book explains it all. I would highly recommend his book to anyone interested in World War Two history, especially that of the Pacific War.
