Cerebral Science Fiction on a Par with 2001: A Space Odyssey

This film is based on a Russian movie of the same name taken from a novel of the same name by Polish author, Stanislaw Lem. It concerns a crew aboard a space station orbiting a planet called Solaris. There is an intelligent entity on the planet that is able to read the minds of the crew members and create apparitions from their subconsciouses. Science fiction movies are divided between space opera/horror films like Alien, Star Wars and Star Trek and cerebral movies designed to make you think and question things like 2001: A Space Odyssey and this one, Solaris. No monsters, laser blasters or dark-suited villains here. Just adults in crisis struggling with their perceptions of reality in the grip of an alien intelligence manipulating their feelings and memories. It is slow and deliberate, better than the original and forces you to talk about its meaning after the show. Clooney brings the pathos playing the role of a psychologist sent to help the crew out. But he is still grieving from the recent loss of his wife. The movie is not for everyone. But if you want an intelligent, thought-provoking evening, Solaris will satisfy.

Solaris in Sold Viewed Playful New: High Weirdness
Sold Viewed Playful New: High Weirdness
Published by Terry Fleming • February 22, 2022

Welcome to Sold, Viewed, Playful, New, where we spotlight popular/fascinating/favorite items in four distinct categories. Sold, for used books. Viewed, for DVDs or Blu-rays. Playful, for board, card, or video games. And New, for new books. Author Erik Davis coined the term High Weirdness in his book of the same name to refer to a genre of Sci-Fi and philosophical writing that charted "the emergence of a new psychedelic worldview out of the American counterculture of the seventies." While Davis focused primarily on authors from America’s west coast, I'm going to expand the category to include a bit more with this month's recommendations.
